Jazz at Joe Joe Jims - Tim Amann xTet

The Tim Amann xTet is a well-established group based in the West Midlands that plays melodic and soulful contemporary jazz, focusing primarily on original compositions. The core members are Tim Amann (piano, composer and arranger), Sam Rogers (saxes) Ray Butcher (trumpet) who adds his own compositions and Adam Gilchrist (bass) while Carl Hemmingsley and Tim’s son Aidan Amann alternate on drums. The xTet plays a variety of lyrical original jazz compositions with influences ranging from Celtic and East European folk styles through hard bop and blues to gospel tinged numbers. Tim, Sam, Adam and Carl are also members of the award-winning Walsall Jazz Orchestra for which Tim also contributes a range of original compositions.

A first album, ‘xTet’ was released in 1999 and includes some live elements of the band’s first appearance at the Montreux Jazz festival. A second album “The Scarecrows” was recorded during a tour of Germany in 2000 and features several contributions from guests and from vocalist Sheila MacRory. A third album,“Still Waters” was released in 2011 based again around Tim Amann’s original material. The xTet built up a close musical collaboration with leading Russian saxophonist and composer Oleg Kireyev, touring with him several times in the UK and also playing to large and enthusiastic audiences in Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2007 and 2010.

Collectively or in various related projects members of the band have also performed with a long list of established jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis, David Murray, Art Farmer, Jean Toussaint, Scott Hamilton, Bobby Shew, members of the Buena Vista International Orchestra from Cuba, Courtney Pine, Tim Garland, Soweto Kinch, Dave O’Higgins, Guy Barker, Julian Arguelles, Tim Whitehead, Don Rendell, and also Martin Shaw, with whom several members of the band recorded one of the Walsall Jazz Orchestra’s release – Little Steps.

Tim Amann xTet can be heard regularly in the Midlands when not playing further afield, at Birmingham Jazz supported events such as Rush Hour Blues and the Jam House as well as a regular monthly spot at The Trumpet in Bilston –usually on the first Friday evening of the month. Tim is a longstanding member of Andy Hamilton’s Bluenotes and appears regularly at the Silvershine Club in Bearwood and Fletcher’s Bar in King’s Heath. He also plays around the Midlands with v The arious other regular bands including Steve Ajao’s Club BeBop Quartet, Butcher’s Brew, which played to a sell out crowd at Ronnie Scott’s back in April, and with jazz vocalist Roy Forbes, and features in further recordings with all three of these groups.

Sarah Warren Band – Blues/Country Rock

Sarah Warren Band – Blues/Country Rock

If you enjoy powerful vocals and driving blues rock with a touch of country, then Friday 22nd July will be a date for your diaries as we welcome the Sarah Warren Band to Joe Joe Jims.

The first incarnation of the band formed during the autumn of 2006 and stayed as a four piece line up with a ‘blues based’ sound playing Etta James tracks and Stevie Ray Vaughn covers and went on to release the album Fool for a Pretty Face whilst building an impressive reputation for their live performances. Through writing their own material, the band naturally found a new identity, which now leans towards a ‘country rock’ feel to the music, but still very much with a slightly ‘bluesy’ edge as evidenced on their second album Tempers and Tantrums.

Following the disbandment of the original line-up and a period of working on other projects, such as Stone Mountain Sinners with ex-Sarah Warren Band member Nick Lyndon, Sarah has once again returned to the band format and, as recent reviews will tell you, “Sarah attacks her confident performances with a truck load of conviction and is vocally compared to the likes of Janis Joplin and Steve Marriott” … sounds good to us!

Five Points Gang - Blues Rock

On Saturday 10th September we are excited to welcome London-based blues rock trio Five Points Gang to Joe Joe Jims!

The band blend brand new original material with smokin’ hot classic blues and has hugely diverse influences, which breathes new life into the blues genre.
Their debut album, WANTED, released on Lunaria Records in October 2021, has received enormous critical acclaim (Blues From The Ouse “Album Of The Year”) due to great songwriting, exceptional musicianship and its fresh perspective on blues.

However, the Gang are best known for their dynamic live performances, leaving audiences exhausted and somehow screaming for more. Five Points Gang is a truly international band – in the words of one reviewer, “A Welshman, a Frenchman, and Brazilian walk in to a bar… and blow the place apart”!

We’re looking forward to welcoming the 2022 UK Blues Federation “Best Emerging Artist” nominees to Joe Joe Jims and recommend snapping-up a ticket sooner rather than later!

Show Starts: 8.00pm | Ticket: £8.00 (+Fees) online | £10.00 on the door (subject to capacity) | Buy Tickets Online

Paul Bridgewater & the Electric Blues Rebellion – Classic Blues Rock

On Friday 16th September we have the welcome return of The Electric Blues Rebellion, featuring legendary local blues singer Paul Bridgewater (Slowburner), playing a powerful mix of original blues rock numbers taken from Paul’s solo albums ‘Seven Songs’ and ‘The Other Side Of The Sun‘ plus the 2016 collaborative ‘Setting Suns’ album along with a selection of classic blues rock numbers.

Paul, best known as front man for Slowburner, is renowned as one of the UK’s finest vocalists, so much so in fact that another local singer who did alright for himself, called Robert Plant, commented that “Paul’s a great singer who continues the tradition of great British blues & soul singers” … great praise indeed!

Vincent Flatts Final Drive - No-Nonsense Blues Boogie

Back by popular demand, Vincent Flatts Final Drive are returning to JJJ on Friday 20th September to provide another great evening of take no prisoners blues boogie!

We hardly feel we need to describe the Flatts as you all know them by now, right? However, for the uninitiated we can attest to the fact that the boys always put on a great show packed full of driving boogie numbers featuring excellent guitar work from Gary Harper underpinned by the driving rhythm section of Rich Shelton (Drums) and Russ Cook (Bass) … oh, and of course Birmingham music leg-end Bertie on vocals!

We anticipate a huge demand for tickets for this show so recommend booking early … don’t miss this one folks!
